ऋग्वेद १. १५. १

The first ever mention of Surya comes from the Rigveda texts Rucha 1.15.1 which says: This solar year, Uttarayan, Dakshinayana, spring etc. Twelve months, Chaitra etc., Shukla and Krishna Paksha, day and night, Muhurta which is the combination of thirty phases, “Kashtha” which is the combination of eighteen “nimesh” and a nimesh. etc. distributes as the division of the time. As Manu has said, and draws with him the juices of all medicines and waters from all places, He is situated in space with the rays, and moves with the wind.

Iconography:

Surya is usually with two arms with lotus flowers. He is riding a chariot pulled by seven horses which indicate seven visible colours and the charioteer is Aruna. Another interesting feature is he often wears shoes.

रावण रचित शिव तांडव स्तोत्र श्लोक १५

The folklores of love of Shri Mahadev for his wife Maa Sati are famous since ancient times.

Shiva lived in a crematorium and used the ashes from pyres to apply on his body. Sati was a princess with all abundances in life. She barely knew any harsh realities of life. She fell in love with Lord Shiva and did rigorous penance to please him and also to obtain permission from her father for the wedding. Her father gave her hand to Mahadev against his wishes.

Textual Description:

The ancient texts describe the wedding as Paanigrahan of Parvati by four armed Shiva. Shiva has Jata Mukut and holds a Parshu – the axe and a Trishul – a trident. Bhagawan Vishnu along with his wives Bhudevi & Lakshmi are also present and Brahma – creator of the world is the priest for the wedding.

Bali, the grandson of Pralhad, became king in later period. He too like his grandfather was a devotee – bhakt of Bhagwan Vishnu. He conquered the earth and reigned lawfully. Bali decided to give anything that anyone would ask for Daan the holy donation during the Yagya which resulted in pompous ego of King Bali.

Seeing this, to defeat the ego, Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated himself as Vaman the dwarf and asked Bali to give as much as land that he would cover in three steps. Vaman turned into enormous size and in the first two steps he covered everything Bali ruled and for third step Bali offered his head.

Click from Kikli temple near Pune, carving depecting the arrival of Vamana and Bali offering holy water as Ardhya to perform Daan.

The dwarf – Vamana turned into Trivikram and King Bali bowing under his foot.

Nataraja outside Badami Cave no. 1

Nataraj is an Avatar or form of Lord Shiva as divine Dancer. Shiva is known for his dance form

Tandava which has been in described in ancient texts like Uttarakamika agama etc. Shiva holds #agni, gajahasta or dandhasta mudra with a snake wrapped in one of the hands and a damaru. He stands on a lotus pedestal using only one leg and usually left leg is lifted in air. Clicked in March 2015, this picture is from Cave One of Badami. The mural is about 1 and a half meter tall with 18 arms.

Ganesha is near his feet and the Nandi - the bull can be seen behind him. Today is celebrated as International Dance Day which Is celebrated as Global Celebration of dance. Although the day is celebrated to honor Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of Modern Ballet, I think it would be appropriate to remember the most ancient god of Dance

Indology is study of the literature and cultures, languages, and history of India and also that it is a subset of Asian studies.

The origins of Indology can be dated back to 350 to 290 BC when a greek diplomat - Megasthenes visited Chandragupta Maurya. Megasthenes composed a four volume "Indica".

More than 1000 years later, Muhammad ibn Ahmad Al- Biruni complied his research as "Tarikh Al-Hind".

This Ancient civilization has always amused people across the globe and within equally.

I am thrilled to have documented several locations through my blog and through my lense. This blog is an attempt to describe several murals - sculptures, paintings - Frescos etc.

I am not an academically trained or certified person but just a hyper enthusiast.
